Health System Transformation
Our community is growing and evolving
Our community is growing fast. Over the last 10 years, our population has increased by nearly 1000 people, bringing it to over 4000 community members living on the reserve. PFN is the fastest growing community in Ontario and over half our population are under 25.
Many young people may view the need for services differently today. Although services have increased, there is still not enough to reach all our members and meet the changing health needs of the community.
Pikangikum is exercising their right to self-determination through their health transformation strategy. Health System transformation is about redesigning how services are delivered and bringing more capacity to the community to deliver those services in a safe and culturally appropriate way.
Health system change is a key action area under the community's health plan. One of the biggest changes PHA is taking on is the transfer of nursing services from Indigenous Services Canada to the community.
Once the nursing transfer takes place, PHA will have full control over designing and creating their own programs, services and policies that meet the needs of the community.

What does this mean for our community?
- Nurses will no longer work for the government—they will work directly for the community.
- More consistent nurses that are here because they choose to be here.
- Nurses will work closely with community health staff to bring you wraparound care.
- More support staff so that nurses are free to provide you with the care you need.
- You will have a better chance of getting to know and trust your caregiver.
